Forta Fi

A brief history of FORTA FI

Extensively tested over 35 years of history.

The first FORTA-AR asphalt reinforcement tested at the University of Texas in the mid-1980s had its drawbacks.
The new FORTA-FI asphalt reinforcement, extensively researched and tested at Arizona State University in 2008 and 2009, has shown incredible results.

• Later tested at more Universities and Research Centers in the US:
– IRA A. FULTON SCHOOLS OF ENGINEERING,
– NATIONAL CENTER FOR ASPHALT TESTING (NCAT)
– NATIONAL CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR SMART INNOVATIONS,
– SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES,
– RUTGERS UNIVERSITY,
– PENN STATE UNIVERSITY,

Launched in the US market in March 2009.

Types of Forta Fi reinforcement

Three (3) protected mixtures, consisting of Aramid fibers, Polyolefins and other materials, packed in a polyethylene bag of 500gr.

• HMA (HOT MIXED Asphalt) Designed for operating temperatures of 121-190 ˚C,
• WMA (WARM MIXED Asphalt) Designed for operating temperatures of 100 ˚C or greater;
• PAT (HOT AND COLD patch Asphalt) Designed for any mixing temperature.

Forta Fi Composition

Mixture of polyamide fibers of Aramid, Polyolefins and other materials.

• Polyolefins enrich and modify bitumen, while Aramid makes three-dimensional reinforcement (3D), respektively asphalt reinforcement.
• Aramid fibers are 5 times stronger than steel, ie they have a hardness of 400,000 psi or 2,758 MPa or 28,130 kg / cm2.
• 19.4 million Aramid fibers in a bag of 500 gr of FORTA FI for 1 ton of asphalt.
• 47 Aramid fibers per 1cm3 of asphalt.

Advantages and benefits

Prolongs asphalt life over> 50%.
• Direct and complete mixing with asphalt:
– for 15 to 20 seconds.

No need for any asphalt modification:
– not even in the recipe,
– not even at the Asphalt Base,
– nor during paving and compaction of asphalt.

Easy to use:
– In each ton of asphalt is added a bag of 500 gr of Forta Fi,
– Can be mixed in Asphalt Bases of Batch type but also of Drum type, and that at any speed,
– Distribute completely and evenly in the mixer,
– As such it is formulated for any temperature of the mixture.
– Enables 3D distribution of Aramid fibers inside the asphalt, thus making 3D reinforcement of asphalt (isotropic reinforcement).

This affects:
– reduction of rutting from 25% to 32%,
– Increase of crack resistance from 100% to 340%.
– Significantly increase of the durability of asphalt at extremely low temperatures and improves asphalt performance at high temperatures.
– Increase of the resistance of asphalt to water.
– Increase of the resistance of asphalt to abrasion, asphalt consumption.
– Enables cost savings for asphalt construction (immediate or long-term savings, or both)
– Reduce of asphalt maintenance costs by 33% -35%.
– Enables the reduction of asphalt thickness up to 35%, in all layers of asphalt. Enables the reduction of asphalt thickness, without increasing the cost of asphalt and still maintaining the superior performance of asphalt.

Ideal solution for problematic road sections

– Heavy traffic,
– Roads where heavy vehicles are circulating,
– Roads with deep cracks,
– Roads with deep ruttings.
– Roads where high traffic frequency makes complete road reconstruction impossible.

• Hundreds of successful projects distributed around the world,
• Many unique challenges presented where standard asphalt mixes have failed:

• Airports,
• Urban bus stations,
• Parts of roads in front of traffic lights,
• Roads near Roundabouts,
• Sloping and wrinkled roads from braking,
• Mountain roads where very low temperatures dominate during the year.
